Summer Volunteer Programs in Tanzania are more than just travel — it is an opportunity to connect with communities, learn from different cultures, and contribute to meaningful local projects.
At Maasai Volunteering Solutions (MVS), we work directly with Maasai communities in Longido, Tanzania, creating volunteer programs focused on health, education, environmental restoration, and community empowerment.
Our goal is to support sustainable development while respecting and preserving Maasai traditions and culture. Through community-led initiatives, volunteers become part of real projects designed to improve quality of life while helping communities adapt to environmental and social changes.
Maasai Volunteering Solutions (MVS) is a non-profit organization created to support sustainable development in Maasai communities in Longido, Tanzania.
The organization was founded in 2020 by members of the local Maasai community, led by Ayubu and other community leaders. In 2022, Loreto Rocha, known online as “Chilena en Tanzania,” joined the organization after years of experience working in local development, innovation, and entrepreneurship projects in both Chile and Tanzania.
MVS focuses on creating practical and sustainable solutions that help Maasai communities adapt to modern challenges while preserving their traditions and identity.
Traditionally, the Maasai people lived a nomadic lifestyle based on pastoralism and cattle herding. Moving between territories allowed grazing lands and ecosystems to naturally recover over time.
However, climate change, population growth, borders between countries, and expanding cities have forced many Maasai communities to adopt a more permanent lifestyle.
This transition has increased pressure on the land, accelerating soil degradation, environmental challenges, and economic difficulties for families that depend on livestock.
At Maasai Volunteering Solutions, we work together with communities to explore sustainable solutions that combine traditional knowledge with new practices that improve health, food security, and environmental resilience.
We currently work with Maasai communities in Engikaret, located about one hour from Arusha, Tanzania.
Our volunteer programs focus on five main areas:
Environmental projects focus on regenerative agriculture and ecosystem restoration.

The goal is to help communities better understand both traditional and modern health challenges.

One of the most unique parts of the experience is living close to the Maasai community and experiencing daily life in rural Tanzania.
Volunteers spend 4–5 days per week in the village working on projects and weekends in Arusha or exploring other destinations in Tanzania.
Daily life in the village is very different from city life. Community activities usually begin around 10 AM after families finish taking care of their livestock in the morning.
Transportation between villages is commonly done by motorcycle, and depending on the season and project activities, volunteers may explore surrounding landscapes, hills, and even encounter wildlife in the area.
Besides volunteering, participants also have opportunities to explore some of Tanzania’s most incredible destinations.

English is highly recommended because many project activities involve communication between volunteers, local coordinators, and community members.
Community members help translate between English and Maasai during activities and trainings.
Spanish-speaking volunteers are also welcome, although communication may take more time due to translation needs.
At Maasai Volunteering Solutions, volunteers work directly with communities on projects designed around real local needs.
The experience is not focused on tourism alone — it is about cultural exchange, practical learning, and long-term impact.
Volunteers become part of everyday community life while contributing their skills and learning from Maasai traditions and ways of living.
